Job hunting in an ever changing world can be very confusing. What’s worse is that there are so many jobs posted and in so many places. The International Association of Employment Web Sites states that there are more that 40,000 employment related websites currently. There is no telling if the site where you found that last job will even be any use anymore.
Major job boards – The major boards like Careerbuilder, Monster, and Hotjobs are heavily advertised and thus have good traffic. However companies have been looking for other alternatives due to the job boards high cost, low specialization
Classifieds – Traditional mainstay of newspaper, online classifieds such as craigslist, backpage, and kijiji.com have very broad readership and high traffic. Craigslist also tend to have very up-to-date listing. However they are set to a general audience, tend to get a lot of responses, and unless you are a specialist it may be hard to stand out.
Recruiters – Sometimes what you really need to advance your career is professional help. Recruiters that agree to work with you should not charge you, but should be paid by their client. A good tool to find a recruiter in your industry is to reach out to contacts on Linkedin.
Niche sites – Niche sites represent a specific industry or portion of the population. These tend to have different posting than the major boards or the large boards, the real value is that they are specialized so that on a board in your industry you are more likely to see advertisements for positions that interest you and your peers. The drawback is that each one is different, and most are small business.
JobThere.com attempts to solve some of these problems of Niche sites. By reviewing niche job boards, we can alert you to resources that you never knew were right at your finger tips and help weed out many of those that are unpopular, scams, or do not have updated postings.
